Stainless Steel Sink: 4 Reasons It’s the Best Choice

Choosing the right sink material for your kitchen can be an intense internal battle especially when the market is flooded with various different options which leads to the ever burning question into the customer’s mind-Is stainless steel sink good?
And to answer this question- there’s a reason why stainless steel has been the top contender in terms of material for sinks. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of owning a stainless steel kitchen sink to help decide what is best for you!
Stone is not a good option anymore
Stone sinks, an old material, are trending again but have challenges. They absorb liquids, making them prone to cracking, chipping, and staining. They are also expensive, hard to find, and require time-consuming customization.
Kitchen is an important space in home. It being the primary food preparation centre and inside this centre lies the underrated hero- the kitchen sink-primarily used for activities such as pre-preparation, dishwashing, rinsing. A poor sink choice can lead to a disastrous workstation and cause the homemaker distress.
Stainless steel sinks are amongst the most popular options to consider when looking for the perfect solution.
- Easy to Maintain Sink – Their smooth, non-porous surface allows easy cleaning with minimal effort, thereby preventing accumulation of dirt and bacteria on the sink. Just use a minimal abrasive soap and water and wipe it off with a gentle cloth.

- Goes with everything– Everyone knows designing a kitchen can be a task-from deciding the perfect colour and everything matching takes a toll so imagine on top of that having to choose the colour of our sink!? I think not. This is reason enough why to choose stainless steel. They go with every colour– from grey/black appliances, funky countertops and backsplashes, and different styles- they are the perfect complimentary statement piece.
- Available for every budget– The price of the stainless steel kitchen sink varies proportionally to the thickness of the stainless steel, size of the sink and the type of sink design you are looking for, for instance- handmade, undermount, double bowl etc.
- Durable and strong– Can easily stand rough usage, heavy vessels and weight without any concern of breakage and cracks. Higher the thickness of the stainless steel, the more power it can withstand. The highest steel thickness available in the Indian market is 1.50mm.
CONS
While they may be unbreakable, they can certainly get a few scratches here and there. Since stainless steel is a metal, they can make a banging noise if the dishes are being done in the sink. This should not be a deal breaker because some brands such as Anupam, include sound deafening pads/ coatings to resolve this issue. Also, heavier the steel (equivalent to higher the gauge of the stainless steel) the more resistant to noise it will be.
Now that we have proved how stainless steel is THE BEST option for you, the guide does not end here. There’s more to stainless steel so let’s discuss in detail.

1. GRADE
Steel grade 304 (also known as food grade) is regarded as the best grade for stainless steel. This grade means that the steel is an 18/8 stainless steel and made up of at least 50% iron. Any grade less than 304 is not recommended. 316 grade (also known as medical grade) stainless steel is also a premium secondary option owing to it being costly. It offers vastly superior corrosion resistance to chlorides and acids and is mainly preferred for people living in areas facing hard water situations.
2. THICKNESS
The maximum available thickness is 1.50mm when it comes to stainless steel sinks and very few brands out there are doing it. Check out Anupam’s 1.5mm thickness stainless steel sinks series. Having a thicker sink would mean that it is more sound-absorbent and strong.
3. TYPE
Whether you require a double bowl, undermount, with or without drainboard, nowadays there are a lot of design options to choose from. So go with the one that is the most compatible with your needs!
4. SIZE
Depending on the dedicated space given to your plumbing and wet area, choose the right size beforehand. A large sink (preferably at least 32 inches) for your dishwashing needs and less than 32 inches for your veggie sink.
5. NOISE RESISTANT
Look for stainless steel sinks having a noise resistant pad or coating to minimize noise created from the sink.
